Angels Camp Residents Allowed Back Home

Angels Camp residents in the area of Centennial Lane were allowed back into their homes around 6 p.m. Monday evening after they were evacuated that afternoon because of a chlorine leak at the Angels Camp Water Treatment plant.

City officials ordered the precautionary evacuation of about 50 homes in the area of the treatment plant while members of the Office of Emergency Services haz mat team tried to stop the leak on one of two 150 pound chlorine cyclinders located inside the treatment plant building.

Tim Shearer, Angels Camp City Administrator said there was a very high concentration of chlorine in the building and that hampered the efforts of crews.

The evacuation affected about 40 to 50 homes in the area south of downtown near Highway 49. An evacuation center was set up at the fire station at Monte Verde in Angels Camp.

According to Angels Camp police, residents were allowed back into their homes around 6 p.m. Monday evening.

Shearer said Monday evening that he didn´t think the leak would affect the treatment plant´s operations, and that the plant should be back in full operation Tuesday.
