National Forest Welcomes Campers This Weekend

Thousands of travelers are flocking to the campgrounds in the Stanislaus National Forest for the long Memorial Day Weekend.

Most of the Stanislaus National Forest´s developed campgrounds are open for the long Memorial Day Weekend – one of the busiest camping weekends of the year.

Forest spokesman Pat Kaunert says primitive camping spots in the forest are still plentiful. Forest information, maps and campfire, firewood, and wilderness permits are available at all forest offices.

The Rec Fee Demo is a pilot program approved by congress. camping fees in these area range from $5 to $8 dollars per night. These camping areas include Hull Creek, Sandbar Flat, Niagara Creek, Mill Creek, Bloomfield, Mosquito Lakes, Cascade Creek and Fence Creek.

This year the forest is continuing the recreation fee demonstration project, a nation-wide test program implemented at eight area campgrounds.

Newly constructed Wak-A-Luu-Hep-Yoo (Wild River) Campground, with 49 campsites, running water and showers, will be open this weekend as well, with a fee of $13 per night.

Kaunert says campers and visitors to the area should use caution around the many rivers with in the national forest which are running high and fast from the snow pack run-off.
