Davis Ready To Sign Same Sex Bill

Sponsored by:

A bill that gives same-sex couples in California most of the rights and responsibilities of married spouses is about to become law. Governor Davis is scheduled to sign legislation tonight that will allow registered domestic partners to seek child support and alimony and grant them exemptions from estate and gift taxes among other benefits.

Supporters say the law puts California on equal footing with Vermont when it comes to civil rights for gays and lesbians. Opponents claim it amounts to gay marriage.

The law is scheduled to take effect in 2005. Tonight´s ceremony will take place at 6:30 at the San Francisco L-G-B-T Community Center.
