More Training Due For Foster Parents

Sponsored by:

California´s prospective foster parents can expect more anti-discrimination training under a bill signed Wednesday by Governor Davis.

The measure aims to assure that foster parents respect the race, ethnicity, religion and sexual preference of an estimated 250,000 foster care children in California. Backers say the bill protects foster children from living in homes where they are singled out, insulted or assaulted based on their backgrounds.

Republicans objected to the bill earlier this year, calling it part of a social agenda to advance gay rights. They say most foster parents have faith-based households and believe homosexuality is wrong.
