Drop In Deaths, DUI Arrests Up

Sponsored by:

It may be a coincidence. But there has been a big drop in traffic deaths in California so far this Labor Day weekend while the number of drunken driving arrests is higher.

California traffic accidents claimed 15 lives during the first 36 hours of the Labor Day weekend compared to 27 in the same period a year ago. The California Highway Patrol says driving under the influence arrests statewide number 1,075 compared to 944 in the same 36-hour period a year ago.

The CHP during the Labor Day weekend declared what it calls a “maximum enforcement period.” All available CHP officers are concentrating on stopping speeders, reckless drivers and those driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The CHP says that a year ago 45 people died in California traffic during the Labor Day period that ends at midnight of the Monday holiday.
