Now More Cars Than People In America

Sponsored by:

A watershed moment for America — there are now more vehicles than people to drive them.

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics says the average household has 1.9 vehicles and 1.8 drivers. That works out nationwide to 204 million vehicles and 191 million drivers.

There are a number or reasons for this: more families with two breadwinners driving separately to work, more teenagers with cars, and more families with recreational or weekend wheels. Cars are also lasting longer, often being driven 200,000 miles or more.

The director of the Metropolitan Institute at Virginia Tech calls the development “the final realization of the entire American ethos.” Robert Lang says, “There´s a real love of the road.”

How many households have no cars? Only eight percent.
