Complex Fire Sends Smoke Into Area

Sponsored by:

Fire fighters are fighting a number of blazes burning today across more than 9,600 acres in Santa Clara, Stanislaus and Alameda counties. Smoke from these fires has drifted into the Mother Lode region.

State forestry firefighters expect to contain the Santa Clara Complex fires by Monday.

CDF spokeswoman Karen Terrill says seven major fires and several smaller ones make up the complex. Six helicopters and seven air tankers– one from the Columbia Air Attack base here– are battling the flames along with more than a hundred fire engines and hundreds of firefighters. No structures have been damaged and no injuries have been reported. Officials believe the fires began Monday after a lightning storm moved through the area.
