Judge Denies Student Fees Lawsuit

Sponsored by:

University of California students who sued over recent fee increases will have to pony up the extra money, at least for now. A San Francisco Superior Court judge yesterday denied their request for an injunction that would have blocked UC from raising degree fees for law, medical and other professional students this fall.

In July, the UC Board of Regents voted to boost student fees by 25 percent across the board. But, the lawsuit brought by ten students from UC Berkeley, UCLA and UC Davis sought relief only for those already enrolled in professional degree programs such as nursing and business.

The increase ranges from several hundred dollars to almost $2,000 a semester. Classes resume later this month. But the students´ attorney says the lawsuit, which also challenges two other fee hikes that took effect this year, is going forward, so the students may wind up getting a refund.
