Money Headed To Non-Gaming Tribes

Sponsored by:

Each of California´s poorest Indian tribes will get an additional $680,000 this year under legislation that shifts the money from some of the long-term gambling tribes.

The Revenue Sharing Trust Fund set up under the 1999 tribal gambling compacts is supposed to pay more than a million dollars annually to the 75 tribes that have no gambling or operate fewer than 350 slot machines. But the fund doesn´t have enough money, so tribes were paid only about $410,000. Legislation Governor Davis is signing will shift $50 million from a separate fund financed by gambling tribes.

Another $3 million from the fund will go to establish an Office of Problem and Pathological Gambling.
