Power Authority Chief: More Renewable Energy Needed

Sponsored by:

California energy agencies want one-fifth of the state´s energy to come from renewable sources by 2010, seven years earlier than the previous goal.

Power Authority head David Freeman says that if by the end of the year, the Public Utilities Commission hasn´t started requiring utilities to provide more power from renewables, he will ask legislators to give him that authority instead. He says one way or another, California is turning to renewable energy.

A utilities commission spokeswoman says the commission already is working to ensure the state meets the goal jointly set by the commission and the power authority.

They´ve agreed to increase California´s use of renewable energy to 20 percent by 2010, twice as fast as the previous 2017 target.
