Former SF Giants Star Has Open-Heart Surgery

Bobby Bonds, a former baseball great and father of Giants player Barry Bonds has undergone open-heart surgery. Jim Davenport, Bobby Bond´s best friend and former teammate, says the operation went fine, and that Bobby Bonds will stay in intensive care for five days to recover.

Because of his father´s surgery, Barry Bonds didn´t play in last night´s Giants game. The San Francisco Giants say Bobby Bonds has been in a hospital in the Bay Area for at least three days.

Early last month, Bobby Bonds spent some time in the hospital fighting pneumonia. He underwent surgery on a brain tumor in April and has battled lung cancer. Still, he´s had the energy to go to spring training and see his son and the Giants play in Pacific Bell Park this season.

Bobby Bonds was the second player to hit 30 homers and steal 30 bases in the same season in 1969, when he was playing with the San Francisco Giants.
