College Fees Go Up

Sponsored by:

Going to college in California just got more expensive.

The regents of the University of California and the trustees of California State University today approved raising student fees by as much as 30 percent as the state struggles with a $38 billion deficit.

U.C. regents recommended raising fees by 25 percent. But they also agreed to allow the system´s president to push that increase up to 30 percent if needed.

The vote at U.C. came in committee and is expected to be approved by the full board tomorrow. The CSU vote to raise fees by 30 percent is final.

The increases come over the strong objection of students and some board members. Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante, who is also a regent, says that in tough times, college should be more affordable, not less.
