Votes on College Fee Hikes Today

Sponsored by:

The cost of going to college in California could go up this week as leaders of the state´s public university systems consider hiking student fees by as much as 30 percent.

Regents of the University of California and trustees of California State University are both scheduled to vote on raising fees today.

College administrators say the fees are unavoidable because of sharp cuts in state funding brought on by the $38 billion state budget deficit.

Based on Governor Davis´ proposed budget, the nine-campus UC faces $360 million in cuts to existing programs by 2003 to 2004 out of a budget of about $3 billion.
