Jumping Frog Jubliee Comes Under Fire

Sponsored by:

In its 75th year, and the annual Jumping Frog Jubilee has come under fire from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. PETA is asking the Calaveras County Fair to stop holding the annual event, because they say it “stresses out” the frogs and could speed up the spread of some diseases.

Fair and Jubilee manager Warren “Buck” King says the frogs are well taken care of. He says he has stacks of letters from PETA members, urging him to stop what they call a “cruel” tradition. King says the frogs probably like the competition. He also says the fair is working with State Fish and Game officials to ensure safe handling of the frogs.

So far, there are no plans to cancel the Jumping Frog Jubilee. It´s coming up in May.
