Bush Appeals Pledge Ruling

Sponsored by:

The Bush administration has appealed to the Supreme Court to preserve the phrase “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance. The administration says the reference does not amount to unconstitutional government promotion of religion.

The Elk Grove Unified School District, near Sacramento, joined in the appeal.

The case was initiated by Michael Newdow, an atheist, who sued on behalf of his daughter, an Elk Grove student. Newdow said his daughter shouldn´t be subjected to reciting the pledge.

A panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said last summer that the phrase “under God” made the pledge unconstitutional to recite in public schools.

The Supreme Court could decide before summer whether to take the case.
