Jerry Brown Looks At New Office

Sponsored by:

Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown is taking a look at the possibility of running for California attorney general in three years. Brown told the San Francisco Chronicle he´s given the idea some thought — although he says a decision at this point would be premature.

Because term limits make it crystal-clear when an office will be open, candidates have begun looking at their next campaign far earlier than in the past. Veteran Democratic consultant Kam Kuwata says that sometimes getting a campaign started early will cut another candidate out of the picture. The 65-year-old mayor has served two terms as governor and one as secretary of state. He´s run for president three times, narrowly lost a race for the U.S. Senate and served as chair of the California Democratic Party.

Experts say he has the kind of statewide recognition and network of political and financial support that could pre-empt another candidacy.
