Groups Says SARS Ban Discriminatory

Sponsored by:

A civil rights group is calling on the chancellor of the University of California-Berkeley to reconsider a ban on new students from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan taking classes this summer over fear of SARS.

Diane Chin of Chinese for Affirmative Action says the restriction is discriminatory and too broad. Diana Bonta of the California Department of Health Services said yesterday the university´s decision went a step beyond what her department´s advice would have been.

Berkeley officials say they enacted the ban because they wouldn´t have enough housing or personnel in place to take care of potential SARS cases by the time the summer session begins later this month.
