Volunteers were the stars last night during the Tuolumne County Volunteer recognition awards. A large crowd filled the Sonora Opera Hall to honor those who give of their time and abilities.

€œLifetime Achievement Award€ winner June Wilson retired after more than 30 years as a missionary nurse in Africa and went right to work volunteering in Tuolumne County. Accepting the award for Wilson was Sara Jane Clouse. She said her friend is generous with her time and talents.

Others honored Monday night for their volunteer spirit was Tuolumne County Search and Rescue, Lynn St. Clare with the Girl Scouts, and Mike Higuera from the ATCCA food bank.

The ATCCA food bank is also the Volunteer Champion of the Year award winner and the Sonora Wal-Mart received an award for community excellence.

And the “Never Too Young” award was given to Careesa Rainey, a peer educator who teaches other high school youth about HIV and Hepatitis.
