Arnold attorney faces indecent exposure charge

Sponsored by:

Arnold attorney William Leo Smith, 55, has been charged with a misdemeanor count of indecent exposure. Smith did not show up for his arraignment Wednesday afternoon in Calaveras County Superior Court, but his attorney, Ken Foley, entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

More than one incident allegedly occurred between March 12 and 24 of this year, according to court records and sheriff€™s Capt. Mike Walker. The alleged incidents occurred at Smith€™s Arnold office, in sight of a nearby residence from where the complainant videotaped them, Walker said. Walker said the complainant had already taped at least one incident when she contacted the Sheriff€™s Department.

Authorities were in the process of obtaining a high-quality video camera for her to use when she videotaped a second occurrence on her own camera, and this time Smith was clearly identifiable, Walker said. He added there have been previous complaints involving Smith over the course of several years. When contacted Thursday, Smith referred all questions to his attorney. Foley was out of the county yesterday and unavailable for comment.
