Heavy Hitters Weigh in on Race Initiative

Sponsored by:

Four of California´s highest elected officials are opposing a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban state and local governments from collecting racial data.

Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante, Public Schools Superintendent Jack O´Connell, Treasurer Phil Angelides and Attorney General Bill Lockyer say the Racial Privacy Initiative is bad public policy. The four say the initiative would make it difficult to track health, education and economic trends, as well as investigate hate crimes or racial profiling.

The Racial Privacy Initiative will be on the March 2004 ballot. It would prohibit separating, sorting or organizing individuals based on their race.
