Democrat Lawmakers Plan Local Visits

Sponsored by:

Assembly Speaker Herb Wesson wants Democrats to fan out across the state next week urging support for tax increases. The call comes as work on the California budget crisis has come to a standstill, with Democrats and Republics still at odds over how to solve the state´s $38.2 billion budget deficit.

Wesson wants his Democratic colleagues to visit city councils, boards of supervisors and other community leaders beginning next Monday. Wesson said he wants lawmakers back in the Capitol by Thursday for a vote on a budget plan that will combine spending cuts with new taxes.

Republican leaders, who remain unmoved on the tax issue, say leaving Sacramento at this critical time is a bad idea.
