About four pounds of radioactive material may be missing from a long-shuttered nuclear power reactor near Eureka.

Officials with Pacific Gas and Electric have been searching the reactor pool of the Humboldt Bay plant for three fragments of a uranium fuel rod since July 7th.

PG & E analysts noticed a discrepancy in company records June 23rd. They aren´t sure whether the rods are still on site.

The 65-megawatt reactor was in operation from 1963 to 1976. Company spokesman John Nelson said yesterday the utility was quote “very confiden” it would find the fragments in the 22,000-cubic-foot pool.
