Tuolumne County Library Receives Large Gift

Sponsored by:

Tuesday, Tuolumne County will accept a gift donation to the county´s library of $111,075.29 from the Martha Barnes Account.

The generous bequest is being accepted with open arms by county librarian Constance Corcoran. She says this kind of gift — this big — doesn´t happen very often.

“A bequest of this size is a very unusual occurrence,” she said this morning. She remembered a similar gift to the library about ten years ago, but, she added; “Not of this size.”

Tuolumne County supervisors Tuesday will accept the “unanticipated” revenue, earmarking a good portion of it for the new branch library being built in Tuolumne.

“The very first thing we´re going to do is make a huge investment in the new Tuolumne branch library,” now under construction, Corcoran said. The new branch is slated to open this fall. Much of the furnishing for the new branch will be purchased with the money, Corcoran explained.

Additional funds will be used to do a “complete face lift,” as she puts it, at the main library on Greenley Road in Sonora. The balance of the money – about $51,075 – will be put into a special trust fund for future use, such as buying new books over the coming years.
