Wind-Whipped Wildfire Near Reno

Sponsored by:

An elite team of firefighters has been called in to battle a wildland fire south of Reno.

The blaze, sparked by a target shooter, was whipped by erratic winds after it started and quickly spread to at least 3,000 acres. It has destroyed four homes. At least 16 structures, including the homes, burned or were damaged about seven miles from Reno. Another 350 homes and 200 outbuildings are threatened by the fire, which was fanned by winds gusting to 35 miles an hour before they died down at sunset.

Firefighting crews on the ground were assisted by an aerial armada of 14 air tankers and seven helicopters

A section of U.S. 395, which links Reno with Carson City, was closed for several hours before reopening just before nightfall.
