Better Treatment Needed For Drug Offender Program

Sponsored by:

A new study says that nearly a third of California drug offenders who volunteered for treatment under Proposition 36 were arrested within a year of starting rehab

programs.

Proposition 36 was passed by voters in 2000.

It changed the way the criminal justice system deals with drug offenders by extending to many the option of entering treatment programs instead of prison.

The findings by researchers at U-C-L-A reflects opponents´ objections to the initiative.

The study suggests that longer and more intensive treatment is needed to make a difference for drug offenders.

The study is published in the American Society of Criminology journal Criminology and Public Policy.
