Yosemite Author Dies At 77

Sponsored by:

Shirley Sargent — a wheelchair bound writer who dedicated her life to describing Yosemite National Park´s towering granite faces and deep valleys — has died in Mariposa.

She was 77.

Sargent suffered from a neurological disorder and died on Friday.

The disease made her shake so badly that she wrote by using one hand to hold the other so she could type with one finger.

Still, she overcame her limitations to become one of Yosemite´s foremost historians, and wrote about two dozen books about the park she loved.

Sargent is survived by her nieces, grandnieces, grandnephews, and a cousin, Barbara Billeter.
