The California Institute of Technology is making a little green off the red planet.

Caltech runs the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for NASA, and it patented the twin rovers it sent to investigate the surface of Mars. Now it´s licensing their images for commercial use.

Officials of the private university didn´t say how much money they hope to make, but pledged to donate half to educational outreach programs and the rest for Caltech research.

Danish toy maker Lego is already selling an 858-piece build-it-yourself toy version of Spirit for about $90. NASA also signed its own Space Act agreement with Carl´s Junior and Hardee´s. The fast-food restaurants are selling children´s meals that come with a NASA-approved toy spacecraft.

The rover arrived on Mars on January 3rd and has wheeled away from its lander to explore the landscape.
