Interface Trails Compromise In The Works

Sponsored by:

It will take a cross section of opposing groups to develop a reasonable compromise, but Stanislaus National Forest Chief Tom Quinn said yesterday he would consider modifying the controversial Interface trails plan if that happens.

Quinn met Thursday with more than two dozen individuals and groups that formally appealed his decision on the 8,700-acre Interface Trails area near Arnold. He will hold a second meeting soon to entertain proposed changes.

The Interface decision was announced in December, but those filing appeals to the decision say Quinn eliminated too many motorized trails. Others said motorized recreation should be eliminated altogether from the Interface.

Quinn viewed his decision as a compromise, but 29 appeals were filed with the Forest Service´s regional forester in Vallejo.
