Study: Religious Studies Quell Prison Violence

Sponsored by:

Religious studies may reduce inmate violence in prison settings.

At least, that´s the conclusion of officials at the Sierra Conservation Center in Jamestown.

Officials say 440 medium-security inmates have been part of a program based on the best-selling book “The Purpose-Driven Life”, by a California reverend. Experts say it´s based on a 12-step program for inmate substance abuse recovery.

Incidents of violence at the Center dropped by a third in the year since the program was started, and disciplinary reports declined significantly too. Even the number of riots decreased from five… before the program… to one in the year following the program.

Hector Lozano, who runs the Conservation Center´s substance abuse program, has been quoted as saying the religious studies have had a definite calming effect on the prisoners.

Lozano introduced the program in the prison, after going through it himself, at his own church.
