Rock Quarry Seeking Increase In Production Levels

Sponsored by:

Valley Springs, CA — A Valley Springs gravel quarry located near the Calaveras River is seeking permission to increase production levels by as much as 500%.

The Calaveras County Planning Commission will be reviewing a request by the Hogan Quarry for a permit modification to allow the company to increase output to equal about 500,000 tons of gravel and other quarry products a year.

Environmentalists are concerned that such an increase could wash more silt in to the river which provides most of the drinking water for the city of Stockton.

Although opponents say the move would dramatically step up traffic in the county, staffers say it would make a minimal impact.

The quarry also says the production increase would create new jobs and supply road and building materials throughout the San Joaquin Valley.

The plan goes before the commission in January.
