Water District Stalls Development

Murphys, CA – A moratorium imposed by the Calaveras County Water District has once again set back unit five of the Forest Meadows Subdivision near Murphys.

Unit five has been in the works since 1992 and has been delayed for various reasons ever since. Project engineers say the latest delay came about due to the district´s sewer problems and subsequent moratorium in Forest Meadows.

The project map was set to expire before the district could resolve it´s sewer issues so the Calaveras County Planning Commission passed yet another two-year extension Thursday.

Fred Burnett of the district said it´s not a moratorium but a cap on the number of water connections. The cap was passed this summer when it was discovered the district´s treatment plant was at capacity.

To correct the problem, the district is applying for a permit December 1 to put its treated water into the Stanislaus River.
