Historic Fahey Cabin “Passport In Time” Restoration Project to Begin

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — The Mi-Wok Ranger District Fahey Cabin will soon be restored. The Forest Service says the restoration project will happen in two sessions this month.

The project involves the restoration of the historic cabin, built in the 1870´s by early pioneer rancher Michael Fahey. The cabin served for years as an outpost in early-day summer cattle grazing operations, then in 1938 came under Forest Service administration through a land exchange, and stayed in use until the 1970´s.

The project is located 3 miles Southeast of Long Barn at Wright´s Creek crossing. Forest Service volunteers through the Passport In Time program working on site from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily will accomplish Restoration work. The public is invited to stop by to view the cabin´s restoration in progress.

The Fahey Cabin at Wright´s Creek has been a landmark for over a century, and served as residence for Michael J. Fahey and his family during summer cattle operations. The Forest Service says back in those days, the general area within a ten-mile radius of the cabin was part of a greater community of family and neighbors who spent the summer season looking after their cattle and enjoying camp life in the mountains.

Passport in Time is a volunteer program of the USDA Forest Service. The program provides opportunities for the public to work with professional archaeologists and historians on national forests and grasslands across the country. Projects include diverse activities such as archaeological excavation, survey, oral history, or historic structure restoration.

The goal of PIT is to preserve the nation´s past with the help of the public. Volunteers in the PIT program take part in vital environmental and historical research on public lands. That work helps us understand the human story in North America and preserve the fragile sites and memories that chronicle that story for our children and grandchildren.
