Sponsored by:

Merced, CA — The newest campus in the University of California system is set to officially open with a ceremony scheduled for early next month.

U.C. Merced´s inaugural class of 1000 students will be welcomed by senior university officials, several dignitaries and the University Board of Regents in a Grand opening ceremony September 5th.

Chancellor Carol Tomlinson-Keasey says the faculty is in place, student housing is ready and essential services are quickly coming on line. She calls the event a “very special moment for everyone involved.”

Enrollment records show that U.C. Merced´s first 1000 students will come from all over the state and represent a wide range of economic and ethnic groups.

Officials say the school is the tenth campus in the state´s University system and the first major research university to be built in the United States in the 21st century.

Enrollment is expected to grow at the Merced campus to 5,000 students by 2010 and 25,000 by 2035.
