Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — The Sonora City Council has approved the proposed Lowes Home Improvement project in Sonora by a unanimous 4-0 vote.

The panel reached the decision after two weeks of deliberation and hours of public input. The project was approved by the Planning Commission in June, but was appealed by the organization Citizens For Responsible Growth.

The group´s spokesperson Lisa Vaughn says her organization will now file litigation to block the project. Officials say the suit must be filed within 30 days. Council members asked several questions to the staff regarding traffic, parking, and environmental impacts.

After careful research City staff discredited assertions by the groups attorney that were made at the last meeting. Developer California Gold says the store would provide jobs and an additional shopping option for the city.

The Lowes Home Improvement Center is expected to be built at the corner of Old Wards Ferry and Sanguinetti Roads near Wal-Mart.
