Tuolumne County Library is Celebrating National Crafts Month

Would you like to learn to knit a scarf? Embroider a handkerchief? See a demonstration of spinning and knitting? How about a makeup makeover? Or a session on basic genealogy?

Those are just a few of the programs being offered this month in celebration of National Crafts Month at the Tuolumne County Library´s main branch, 480 Greenley Road, Sonora. Sign up at the library´s Reference Desk to reserve a place in a class. Supplies will be provided unless otherwise noted. Classes will be held in the library´s Community Room.

“There´s a lot more to do in libraries than many people realize,” says Connie Corcoran, county Director of Library Services. “Our March programs that coincide with National Crafts Month are just one example. We look forward to seeing lots of crafters-to-be in the weeks ahead.”

Here is a list of programs through March 22:

• Friday, March 4, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. A representative of The Out of Hand Gallery will teach how to work with clay. For ages 7 and up, with a limit of 15. After items have been fired, students may pick them up at the gallery, 189 S. Washington St., Sonora.

• Saturday, March 5, 9:30 to noon. Pat Clark of Willow Creek Quilt and Yarn will teach how to knit. For ages 8 and up. Students should bring plain yarn and needles.

• Monday, March 7, 3:30 to 5 p.m. Students will learn to knit a long scarf from the staff of By Hand Yarn. For ages 14 and up. Students will need to bring yarn and needles. They should obtain those supplies from By Hand Yarn in downtown Sonora (cost about $10) or check with the shop on what to bring.

• Wednesday, March 9, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Basic genealogy will be taught by the Tuolumne County Genealogical Society. For ages 12 and up. Students should bring information on parents and other relatives, including places of birth and dates of births and deaths.

• Thursday, March 10, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Embroider a handkerchief for Mom for Mother´s Day. Taught by Sierra Needleartists. For ages 12 and up. Students will embroider an initial on a hankie and will need to know in advance what initial they´ll embroider.

• Saturday, March 12, 9:30 to noon. Mother Lode Weavers and Spinners will demonstrate spinning, weaving and knitting. Open house for all ages.

• Saturday, March 12, 2 to 3 p.m. and 3 to 4 p.m. Makeup makeover with KristiAnn Edgerton of Avon. For ages 12 to 18. Sign up for only one of the two classes.

• Wednesday and Thursday, March 16 and 17, 3:30 to 5 p.m. Lane Willey will teach how to do a quilt block based on the theme of the Underground Railroad. For ages 9 and up. Those signing up must be able to attend both classes.

• Saturday, March 19, 9 a.m. to noon. Sierra Needleartists will demonstrate basic stitching and cross stitch, needlepoint, hardanger and surface embroidery. Open house for all ages.

• Saturday, March 19, 1 to 3 p.m. Pat Clark of Willow Creek Quilt and Yarn will teach how to crochet a dishcloth. For ages 8 and up. Students must bring a G hook and cotton yarn.

• Tuesday, March 22, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Spring Crafts for Kids 5 and up. Sign up at the library´s Children´s Desk.

Throughout March, the library will also feature a display of art by children in Kirishima, Japan, Sonora´s sister city.
