Sonora High School Student Dies In Head-On Crash

Douglas Flat, CA — It is still unclear why a 15 year old Sonora boy was behind the wheel of the Toyota SUV that slammed head on into a 2005 Dodge Magnum, resulting in his death Friday morning .
According to the CHP 15-year-old Aaron James Van Winkle attempted to pass another car on Highway 4 near Douglas Flat and hit the Dodge Magnum driven by 59 year old Larry Cornish head on.
Cornsih was taken to the hospital suffering from a broken right foot and a fractured left collar bone.
Van Winkle who turned 15 in May, would have been a sophomore at Sonora High School in the fall.
A fund has been established at Wells Fargo Bank in Sonora to help the Van Winkle Family pay for funeral expenses.
