Calaveras Fogs For West Nile

Sponsored by:

San Andreas, CA — The first ever fogging for mosquitoes is taking place in Calaveras County in an effort to stop the spread of West Nile virus.

Two weeks ago mosquitoes carrying the virus were found in Burson.

Since then, the Calaveras County Environmental Management Agency has been fogging in the west county and in Copperopolis at a spot along Highway 4.

Mosquito Technician Marty Scholl says to apply the fogger he drives his truck with the fogging machine on the back. The machine produces a low-lying fog, which dissipates after five to 10 minutes.

Agency Director Brian Moss says the fog targets adult mosquitoes, while spraying targets mosquito larvae.

For more information, contact the Environmental Health Department at (209) 754-6383 or visit www.co.calaveras.ca.us.

The county also urges residents to report dead birds at (877) 968-2473 or at www.westnile.ca.gov.
