Bigger Carports And Homemade Foods

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA – Those are two issues the Sonora City Planning Commission will take on at its next meeting. The commission will decide if it wants to allow for larger carports to be built on properties setbacks and whether the owner needs a permit to do that.

City Administrator Tim Miller says, “This will modify the size from 264 square feet to 340 square feet. Also, you will not need a permit to build a carport smaller than 340 square feet so it gives residents more flexibility on how they can use their property.”

Also, the commission will decide whether to conform to a new state statute which allows for the preparing and packaging of low risk foods for commercial sale in a home kitchen rather than a commercial kitchen which has stricter requirements.

Miller says, “A lot of the baked goods, pies and those types of things can be cooked in a home kitchen with minimal review and inspection. Then it can either be sold at farmers markets or bake sales or through third party retailers.”

The staff is recommending both be approved. The Commission meeting is Monday, February 11th at 5:30 p.m.
