Beat The Heat

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — With temperatures expected to reach into the triple digits this weekend in the Mother Lode, both Tuolumne and Calaveras Counties Health Departments have put out heat advisories for this weekend and into next week. They say children up to four years of age, the elderly and people with chronic health problems are most at risk of heat illness during prolonged periods of high temperatures. They recommend you stay indoors and drink plenty of water.

Calaveras County Health Officer Dr. Dean Kelaita urges, “If you don’t feel like you’re even that dehydrated, you can still get very dehydrated. It can happen in a short period of time, especially when temperatures are as high as they are, so drinking water periodically and even all day long is important; even if you really don’t feel that thirsty.”

Tuolumne County is offering three Cooling Stations. They will be opened on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, June 30, July 1 and July 2, from noon to 7 PM. The locations are below:

1) Saint Patrick’s Parish 116 West Bradford Street, Sonora
2) Groveland Community Center (18720 Hwy 120) in Groveland
3) The Behavioral Health Enrichment Center at 101 Hospital Road.

You can also beat the heat by heading to a public building, like the library, during their usual hours. The Sonora Main Library on Greenley Road is open on Saturday from 10am to 6pm, but closed on Sunday and Monday. Then it opens again from 10am to 6pm Tuesday and Wednesday. You can get other library hours by calling 209-533-5507. Also, near the library is the Tuolumne County Senior Center is open Monday through Friday, 8am to 4pm, but not on the 4th of July Holiday.
