CA Attorney General Files Court Briefing On Transgender Rights

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — California Attorney General Xavier Becerra took action on behalf of the state in opposition to President Donald Trump’s decision to rescind rules on bathrooms for transgender students.

The earlier federal protections put in place by the Obama Administration allowed transgender students to use bathrooms that correspond with their gender identity. Becerra says he has filed a “friend of the court briefing” in the United States Supreme Court, along with 18 other state Attorney Generals, in support of transgender rights.

Becerra states, “The federal government took a troubling step backward last week in the ongoing fight to protect students from gender identity discrimination. I urge the court to strike down ignorant and degrading policies that perpetuate fear and intolerance.”

A two page letter from the Trump Administration, following the move to reverse course, claimed that the earlier directive from the Obama Administration should be disregarded because it lacked extensive legal analysis and did not go through a public vetting process. The letter notes that it has also drawn lawsuits.
