Closed Yosemite Entrance Brings Special Offer To Visitors

Sponsored by:

Yosemite, CA – Getting around Yosemite National Park can be challenging these days as a section of Big Oak Flat Road, the extension of Highway 120, has been closed due to storm damage, but the park is offering visitors an incentive – free entrance.

As can be seen in these pictures, the recent wet weather has saturated the soil causing it to shift underneath the pavement and created a large crack in the roadway. Park spokesperson Jamie Richards indicates over 100 feet of road near the Big Meadow Overlook has been impacted forcing a closure between Crane Flat and Foresta.  Richards acknowledges that while Crane Flat and the Merced and Tuolumne Groves of Giant Sequoias are open, reaching them can be a challenge. To entice visitors, she states, “We’re waiving the entrance fee to Yosemite through the Big Oak Flat entrance. Visitors that come in on Highway 120 will not be charged an entrance fee until we’re able to get the road reopened.”

There is no estimated date for the road to reopen. Currently, Highway 140/El Portal Road remains the only access to Yosemite Valley.  (Click here for an earlier story detailing travel in the park.)
