A former New York police officer has been sentenced to more than three years in prison for accepting cash payments from a man authorities say was an oxycodone trafficker to ensure he could carry large amounts of cash through airport security.

The U.S. attorney's office says 36-year-old Michael Brady was sentenced Thursday to 37 months in prison. Brady in February pleaded guilty to bribery and extortion.

Brady says he was told the man sold mulch. Brady's attorney says he was vulnerable at the time because he had recently been told of his former wife's lesbian affair.

Brady worked at Westchester County Airport, north of New York City. Authorities say he received about $20,000 from a trafficker of the painkiller oxycodone.

A Florida state trooper and three federal Transportation Security Administration officers also were charged in the case.
