Self Storage and Furniture

More Articles

Let's face it, for the most part, we all have too much stuff. This situation can be compounded for numerous reasons. Moving from one place to another, in the event of the death of a loved one or just a change in circumstances can place us in that ‘overload’ situation. Furniture is often of intrinsic or sentimental value and you just don't want to get rid if it without some thought. Using a mini storage can often provide that stop gap safety net that will allow us time to figure out what we want to keep and what needs to go. Below are some tips that will help to preserve your furniture in good condition while in storage.

Storing Furniture
Furniture by nature is fragile. Taking a few simple steps in the beginning can help to ensure that your furniture comes out of storage in the same condition that it went in!

  1. It might be a good idea to wax wood furniture before storing it. Some woods can be sensitive to moisture.
  2. Consider using climate-controlled self storage. Disassemble bed frames and tie them together.
  3. Use zip- lock bags to store screws and bolt and tape them to the items that they belong to ( not on the finished side… the tape can leave marks). If you stack furniture items, place pads, blankets, or towels between them to prevent scratching.
  4. Take down lawn furniture and tables if possible- especially table legs. Store frames in back corner to prevent them from falling over on other items.
  5. Don't use plastic to cover items in non-climate controlled self storage as moisture can condense under it. Consider using sheets or cotton cloth. Stand mattresses on end, as well as sofas with pallets or cardboard under them. It is a good idea to wrap mattresses in mattress bags or cover them with paper or cloth. Stand mattress on something to allow airflow and to prevent moisture from getting to them. Walls may develop condensation, therefore it is not advised to lean items against the walls.
