Cancer Society Hollywood group joining forces
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The American Cancer Society and Stand Up to Cancer are joining forces in the battle against the disease that causes more than a half-million deaths in the United States every year.
The two groups plan to announce the partnership at a gala gathering of supporters Tuesday night in Los Angeles.
The American Cancer Society's CEO, John Seffrin, says the groups' first collaboration is a joint $20 million pledge to be used to create a "Dream Team" of lung-cancer researchers.
The American Cancer Society, founded 100 years ago, is a worldwide organization that claims more than 3 million volunteer members.
Stand Up To Cancer is supported by numerous members of the Hollywood entertainment industry. It has been noted for its success in raising research funds since its founding five years ago.
