Supervisors name interim LA County sheriff
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Los Angeles County leaders have chosen a temporary replacement for Sheriff Lee Baca.
He's John Scott, the undersheriff in Orange County.
The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday appointed Scott as interim sheriff. He'll take over on Friday after Baca retires. Voters will elect a new sheriff later this year.
Scott has 36 years of law enforcement experience. LA County spokesman David Sommers tells City News Service that before joining Orange County, Scott was head of custody operations for LA County.
Baca announced his retirement this month amid allegations of widespread abuse of jail inmates and misconduct by custody deputies.
Eighteen current and former sheriff's employees face federal charges.
Last year, a federal jury found Baca personally liable in a lawsuit brought by an inmate who said he was severely beaten.
