Man fatally struck by train at SF subway station
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- A man has been fatally struck by a San Francisco light rail train, forcing authorities to shut down a downtown subway station to investigate what happened.
San Francisco Fire Lt. Robert Lopez says the unidentified 45-year-old man was hit by a Muni train Saturday afternoon at the Powell Street station.
Lopez said the train operator was injured while hitting the brakes on the train. The operator was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
A San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency spokesman says four downtown stations are closed as medical examiners and police investigate.
Paul Rose said bus service was added to the main downtown thoroughfare to avoid delays. He said the agency anticipated thousands of riders Saturday ahead of the Chinese New Year parade through downtown and Chinatown.
