Abandoned toddler found safe grandfather arrested
CHULA VISTA, Calif. (AP) -- A skateboarder found an abandoned toddler in a stroller in San Diego County, but the child was returned safely to his parents.
Chula Vista police said in a statement Saturday that the skateboarder came across the sleeping 2-year-old at 11:30 p.m. Friday.
Police say the child was well-cared-for with no signs of abuse, but officers couldn't find parents and took him into protective custody.
Hours later the child's very upset 17-year-old mother called police.
Police say the child's 53-year-old grandfather took him out for a burrito at about 10 p.m. but hadn't returned. While searching the family found the grandfather eating at a restaurant. He didn't know where the child was and appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. He was arrested on suspicion of child neglect.
