Alabama man to be tried in 1980 California slaying
VENTURA, Calif. (AP) -- A judge has found that enough evidence exists to charge an Alabama man in the killing of a Southern California teenager stabbed to death in her home more than 32 years ago.
The Ventura County Star reports (http://bit.ly/1jJtevT ) the judge ruled Thursday that there's also enough evidence to charge 66-year-old Thomas Coalt Young with a special allegation that the killing occurred during a rape. Young will be arraigned Feb. 6.
Young was arrested in Alabama last September.
He was charged with murder in the death of 15-year-old Stacy Knappenberger of Oxnard.
Young was described by authorities as an Army veteran who moved between Alabama, California and Illinois. Investigators say he was linked to the killing by DNA evidence collected at the crime scene in 1980.
