Lukas to get Eclipse Award of Merit on Saturday
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- D. Wayne Lukas rarely, if ever, shies from the spotlight.
He was stylish long before it became the unofficial dress code for thoroughbred trainers, the dapper tailored suits and crisp shirts as much his trademark as his success rate on the track. He's won nearly 5,000 races, with horses who have earned well over $250 million. He's won the Eclipse Award as the sport's top trainer four times.
And on Saturday night, he's getting honored yet again.
Lukas will receive the Eclipse Award of Merit -- the lifetime achievement award -- at horse racing's annual award ceremony Saturday night at Gulfstream Park, part of a show where Horse of the Year and other top honors will be handed out.
Lukas calls it "humbling" to be selected.
