Pilot truck cargo pre inspection program to start
FORT ERIE, Ontario (AP) -- A pilot program that will allow for U.S.-bound cargo trucks to be pre-inspected in Canada is getting underway.
Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is scheduled to be at the Peace Bridge between Fort Erie, Ontario, and Buffalo for the program's start on Monday. The bridge is the third-busiest truck crossing on the northern border and No. 1 in automobile traffic.
New York Sen. Charles Schumer has pushed for pre-clearing Buffalo-bound truck traffic in Fort Erie as a way to relieve congestion and streamline the movement of goods and people.
The pilot program is expected to last up to a year.
